High-Level Talks Aim to Boost UP's Economic Data Reliability

Lucknow, October 14, 2025 - A significant high-level interaction took place between Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the leadership of the National Statistical Commission (NSC), including Chairman Prof. Rajiva Laxman Karandikar. Also present was Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The central agenda was to fortify the statistical system of Uttar Pradesh as a foundational pillar for its ambitious one trillion-dollar economy mission.

Chief Minister Adityanath confirmed the state's dedication to data-driven planning and real-time governance, citing internal tools such as the CM Dashboard. He lauded the ongoing collaborative efforts of MoSPI and NSC in consistently improving the quality of state economic indicators, specifically State GDP, Consumer Price Index, and industrial statistics.

NSC Commits Technical and Financial Aid

NSC Chairman Prof. Karandikar emphasized the critical role of reliable statistics in informing evidence-based public policy. He pledged the Commission's continued support to the state in crucial methodological and technical domains, including refining Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) estimation, price statistics, and survey methodologies. A core objective discussed was the harmonization of central and state statistical systems to ensure the accuracy, comparability, and timeliness of data across all levels of administration.

Mirroring this commitment, Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI, assured the extension of both technical and financial aid to Uttar Pradesh under the "Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS)" Scheme. This assistance will be channeled towards modernizing the state's statistical infrastructure, upgrading data management systems, and building capacity through training for officials of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES).

Review Highlights Progress and Future Scope

The meeting included an appreciative review of DES Uttar Pradesh's performance, noting that the state currently registers one of the lowest inflation rates among major states and consistently releases its State-level Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The state's active participation in key national surveys like the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) was highlighted.

Looking forward, the officials discussed the impending revision of the base year for GDP and IIP to 2022-23, with MoSPI confirming its full support for the smooth transition. The NSC Chairman urged the state to broaden its statistical scope to effectively capture data from emerging sectors, notably digital and service-based economic activities, and to enhance district-level data quality through structured methodological reviews.

Concluding the interaction, CM Adityanath welcomed the strategic counsel, asserting that credible data is fundamental to measuring holistic progress in sectors like agriculture, health, and education, and guaranteed sustained institutional backing for all future statistical endeavors.
