Prime Minister Modi joins the King, Fourth King of Bhutan, and PM of Bhutan at the Kalachakra initiation ceremony in Thimphu, symbolising shared spiritual heritage.

Thimphu, November 12, 2025 - Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today conducted an audience with His Majesty, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, The Fourth King of Bhutan, in the capital city of Thimphu. The meeting reaffirmed the deep and enduring friendship between the two Himalayan neighbours, focusing on shared values and mutual interests.

Prime Minister Modi conveyed heartfelt felicitations on the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary of The Fourth King, extending the best wishes and prayers of the Government and people of India for His Majesty's continued good health and well-being. He also took the opportunity to thank The Fourth King for his "leadership, counsel and guidance" in further strengthening the India-Bhutan friendship.

Discussions between the two leaders covered the comprehensive bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest. Both leaders highlighted the shared spiritual and cultural bonds that are the foundational pillars connecting the people of India and Bhutan.


A Testament to Shared Faith: PM Joins Kalachakra Initiation

Following the royal audience, Prime Minister Modi participated in a significant religious and spiritual gathering, joining His Majesty, the King of Bhutan, His Majesty, the Fourth King of Bhutan, and the Prime Minister of Bhutan at the Kalachakra initiation ceremony at the Changlimithang Stadium.

The ceremony is a key event within the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival in Thimphu. The sacred prayers and rituals were presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan. The presence of the Indian Prime Minister at this central Buddhist ceremony underscores the unique spiritual and cultural symmetry between New Delhi and Thimphu, reinforcing their commitment to peace and harmony in the region and the world.

The visit marks another chapter in the high-level exchanges that characterise the special relationship, demonstrating India's continued commitment to Bhutan as a trusted and essential partner.
