The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced that India will host the 89th General Meeting (GM) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from 15-19 September 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

This prestigious event will bring together more than 2,000 global experts from 100+ countries, setting the stage for critical discussions on international standards that will shape a sustainable, all-electric and connected future. This marks the fourth time India is hosting the IEC GM, following the years 1960, 1997, and 2013.

The Opening Ceremony will be inaugurated by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Minister of New & Renewable Energy, while Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, will inaugurate the IEC GM Exhibition. This will be the largest exhibition in India's electrotechnical sector, featuring innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics, and IT manufacturing.

A key highlight is that India will serve as the Global Secretariat for Standardisation in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) - an important domain for clean and pollution-free energy solutions. According to Mr. Vimal Mahendru, Vice President of IEC, this move reinforces India's role as a global leader in clean technology standards, with IEC's network already representing 99% of the world's population and impacting 20% of global trade.

The General Meeting agenda includes over 150 Technical and Management Committee meetings and several thematic workshops such as:

  • Fostering a Sustainable World (15 September)

  • Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future with Innovation (16 September)

  • Shaping the Future of E-Mobility (17 September)

  • Building a More Inclusive World Through Standards (18 September)

The IEC GM Exhibition will host 75 exhibitors, including leading industries, associations, and startups. Open to the public from 16-19 September 2025 (2 PM-6 PM) with free entry via prior registration, it is expected to attract 2,000+ students from across India.

Reflecting the theme "Fostering a Sustainable World", visitors will be invited to take a Digital Sustainability Pledge at the BIS pavilion. For each pledge taken, BIS will plant one sapling, reinforcing its commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

Founded in 1906, the IEC remains the world's foremost body for developing global standards in electrical, electronic, and related technologies, supported by a network of 30,000 experts worldwide.
