Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended congratulations to the Indian Women's Cricket Team for their "spectacular win" in the 2025 World Cup final.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Indian Women's Cricket Team following their historic and spectacular 52-run victory over South Africa in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 Final on Sunday.
The win, achieved at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, marked the host nation's first-ever ICC Women's World Cup title in the 50-over format, ending years of anticipation and near-misses.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) early Monday morning (03 NOV 2025), the Prime Minister lauded the team's overall performance, emphasizing their composure in the final clash against first-time finalists South Africa.
"A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 Finals. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence," the Prime Minister wrote, highlighting the exceptional talents on display.
India, led by Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, had successfully defended a challenging total of $298/7$, bowling out the Proteas for $246$. The victory was set up by all-round excellence, notably from opener Shafali Verma who top-scored with a robust $87$ and later picked up two crucial wickets.
The team's tenacity, a quality specifically praised by the Prime Minister, was most evident in the bowling performance, spearheaded by the phenomenal Deepti Sharma, who claimed a match-winning $5/39$ and became the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Women's World Cup final. South Africa's valiant chase was anchored by a century from captain Laura Wolvaardt ($101$), but faltered after key wickets fell to the Indian spin attack.
The Prime Minister concluded his message by underscoring the deep national significance of the achievement: "The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports."
The victory is widely regarded as a watershed moment for women's sports in India, fulfilling a decades-long dream and setting a new benchmark for cricket in the country.
