New Delhi, September 21, 2025 - The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) spearheaded the nationwide observance of International Coastal Cleanup Day 2025 (ICC-2025) on September 20, mobilizing more than 26,000 volunteers across the country. The initiative, aligned with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Prime Minister's call for "Swachhta Hi Seva" (Cleanliness is Service), brought together citizens from all walks of life to rejuvenate India's vast coastal regions.

Massive Participation for Cleaner Shores

The beach cleanup drives saw active participation from NCC cadets, NSS members, school and college students, government bodies, NGOs, and local communities. Volunteers engaged in removing litter, plastics, and marine debris, contributing significantly to the restoration of fragile coastal ecosystems. Beyond cleaning, the campaign aimed at creating awareness about sustainable practices, the perils of marine pollution, and the urgent need to protect ocean biodiversity.

A Global Environmental Effort

International Coastal Cleanup Day, observed worldwide every year on the third Saturday of September, is a flagship environmental movement under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP). It focuses on combating marine pollution through community-driven efforts. India has been an active contributor to this movement, with the ICG serving as the national coordinator since 2006.

Protecting India's 11,000 Km Coastline

This year's campaign reinforced India's commitment to safeguarding its 11,000 km-long coastline and coastal communities dependent on marine resources. By engaging diverse stakeholders, the event also sought to inculcate a culture of responsible waste management and eco-conscious citizenship among the younger generation.

A Step Towards National Goals

The campaign was not merely an environmental drive but also a step towards advancing the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which emphasizes a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable India. The Coast Guard's proactive role has consistently positioned it as a guardian of both national security and environmental stewardship.

Way Forward

With rising threats of marine litter, microplastic pollution, and climate change, such citizen-led efforts are crucial to sustaining coastal health and resilience. The ICG has reiterated its commitment to continue working with local communities, schools, institutions, and global partners to make India's coasts cleaner and healthier for future generations.
